Children have a natural drive to do things for themselves, and the Practical Life curriculum provides child-sized tools and experiences to give them a likelihood of success. The children absorb routines of responsibility, employ matching and sorting skills (pre-mathematics), and exercise their fine motor abilities. Many children find the appeal of the Practical Life activities support their development of concentration and tenacity.
Whilst the Practical Life curriculum has been utilised by the 0-3 aged children, upon engaging with them in the casa, a new level of experimentation is observed. Children are still utilising the materials to provide food and drink for themselves, but are also now repeating many activities over and over until they feel satisfied. This drive to refine and perfect their experience gives them a sense of achievement that is so important for self-esteem, as well as providing for control, not just of their fine motor, but also their gross motor in the use of their arms, shoulders and even cross-body movements.
Grace and Courtesy is a segment of the curriculum that provides strategic lessons in the social skills necessary in the child’s community. Beyond manners and greetings, Grace and Courtesy includes responsibility for oneself and one’s environment.
